Question: ficus elastica and kenzia
Good morning, my two plants of ficus elastica and kenzia, kept in the apartment and in the garden according to the seasons and avoiding direct exposure to the sun, present in the saucers small larvae of light color and C-shaped, but are not present ozyorrinchi. What to do? thanks
Answer: ficus elastica and kenzia
there are many beetles that lay their eggs in the ground; from these eggs small larvae are born, which then develop. Some species remain in the ground, a few more months; if it is oziorrinco, from when you see the larvae, to when you will have adults on the leaves of your plants, several months pass, and therefore you cannot exclude that it is these insects. In general the larvae that can be commonly found in the vessels are those of oziorrinco and those of the beetle; although the latter are less harmful than the former, actually at the larval stage it is not pleasant to have insects in the pots, and not only for aesthetic reasons: sooner or later the larvae will begin to feed on the roots of your plants, with consequent damage to the crops, also huge. The fundamental problem lies in the fact that we often notice the problem when whole branches of the radical part have already been devoured. To eliminate these insects from the soil there are commercially available insecticidal products in the form of baits: they are spread on the ground, and buried lightly with a hoe; the larvae that feed on them die rapidly, as do earthworms or other soil insects. If you want a remedy that is less broad-spectrum, and more respectful of nature and useful insects, you can get biological products based on nematodes: these are tiny worms (which are not seen with the naked eye) that colonize the larvae and if feed. Unfortunately in Italy it is much easier to find a broad-spectrum chemical insecticide, rather than to get something for the integrated struggle or respecting the environment. If there is an agricultural consortium near where you live, try asking them, or try internet sites that sell organic farming products.
