Clivia with spots: Answer: parasitic of clivie

Dear Ivo,
clivia is a herbaceous plant, with rhizomatous roots, native to southern Africa; in the apartment, in general, varieties of clivia miniata are cultivated, a species that even in nature lives in areas characterized by low luminosity, and therefore, even at home, they can flower and develop without problems. Less known, but equally beautiful, clivia mirabilis, with pendulous tubular-shaped flowers.
These plants are easy to cultivate, but often undergo particular attacks of parasites. Not knowing the extent and the size of the spots on your foliage, I show you what are the parasites that most commonly attack these plants and that can cause yellow spots. In summer and winter it often happens that the clivia leaves are attacked by the cochineal, which generally lurks beneath the leaves, or at the base, where they are inserted into the head. In this case you should notice small yellow spots, accompanied by the presence of insects, in the form of tiny stiff and oily, or waxy, shields. In this case, treat the leaves with white oil, activated with a product based on pyrethrum. If the spots are large, and also cause necrosis of the leaves, or the leaf page becomes brown and of paper-like consistency, then it is a fungal attack. The fungi that attack clivia are many, and generally develop preferably when the soil in which the plant is grown is kept moist for a long time, with stagnant water. Consider that your plant, after flowering, has entered a period of semi-vegetative rest, during which its cultivation needs have decreased; during the summer months and in the autumn it is sufficient to water the cloves sporadically, and only when the soil is dry. To ensure that the fungus does not proliferate it is necessary to use a fungicide, to be sprayed on the foliage.
