Turmeric


Turmeric is a plant belonging to the Zingiberaceae family. The most known species are the curcuma longa, also known as the domestic turmeric, the curcuma xanthorrhiza and the curcuma zeodaria. In total, there are eighty species of turmeric plants. They are plants grown mainly in tropical areas and originate in the countries of southern Asia, especially China and Polynesia. Its leaves are elongated and have an ovoid shape, its flowers are small and united in spike. The part of the plant used is the stem, especially the root. Its root, in fact, is used in the kitchen after a process that sees a first drying and a subsequent pulverization, thanks to which it assumes its typical yellow-ocher color. Because of the brilliant color that its powdered root takes, turmeric is widely used as a food coloring. In the kitchen, this spice is known mainly because it is one of the main spices that make up curry. Beyond its use in the kitchen, turmeric is used in the homeopathic and aesthetic field for some of its beneficial properties and is, moreover, also contemplated in some rites of southern Asian countries. In India, for example, a turmeric necklace is created for a young woman to wear on the day of her wedding or the promise of marriage. Among the benefits that turmeric can bring to the body, the main one is antioxidant: it helps eliminate toxins and protects against free radicals. On the market, it is possible to find different pills of supplements based on turmeric by going to homeopathic pharmacies or herbalist's shops.

The properties of turmeric



Alongside the antioxidant properties discussed above and which make turmeric a useful spice to combat the aggression of free radicals, this spice is able to fight aging, especially the skin. Precisely for this reason, in some Asian areas the turmeric is redefined "spice of youth" for its high percentage of vitamin C and curcumin, which would together be able to delay the appearance of wrinkles. Curcumin, the main element of turmeric, is considered to have numerous positive health effects in both preventive and therapeutic terms. Known is the positive effect of spice on intestinal pain and arthritis. It therefore has a strong pain-relieving effect. Alongside this, turmeric performs other actions on the intestine; in fact, it has the ability to adjust intestinal functions bringing them back to regularity thanks to its laxative effects. It is able to help digestion, favoring the purification of the body: it reduces the assimilation of sugars, eliminates toxins and burns fat. Thanks to these functions, turmeric is used in slimming diets to help the weight loss process, also because its intake allows to make the metabolism faster. Furthermore, the action of turmeric on fats has a dual function: on the one hand, in fact, it helps weight loss, on the other it has an anti-cholesterol action. At the same time, it favors blood fluidity, causing benefits in its circulation. Furthermore, the diuretic properties of turmeric make it a good ally in the battle against cellulite. Turmeric can be called a real natural antibiotic, performing a positive action on sore throat and flu, while protecting oral mucosa. A further effect of turmeric, even if not yet demonstrated, is of an antitumor type, particularly for pancreatic and neck cancer.

Use turmeric



To take advantage of all the benefits that the spice has to offer, just go to the herbalist's shop and choose to buy turmeric root, to create homemade preparations, or pharmaceutical supplements already ready. The supplements on the market are of different types; You can find them in the form of pills or syrup. The use indicated for turmeric supplements is about 3 tablets per day or, if we talk about liquid supplements, we will need to take about 15 ml diluted in at least 500 ml of water or fruit juice. Not to be forgotten is that these supplements must not be taken during pregnancy and lactation or if you suffer from an ulcer or calculus. If the choice in herbal medicine falls directly on the turmeric root, you will need to learn how to prepare a good infusion. If purchased already in powder, just dissolve it in hot water. More indicated, however, is the purchase of the root in small pieces. In this case, just boil the root in a liter of water and then filter it. Adding to the liquid a teaspoon of honey, moreover, you will get an infusion with an excellent taste and whose beneficial effects will be increased by the soothing properties of honey. A cup of infusion before meals will help keep you healthy and young. In a simpler way, turmeric can be taken directly during meals: make sure you have the spice in the pantry will suffice to take advantage of its beneficial effects.
