Calcareous soil

The peaty soil, which already naturally includes organic material in large quantities, and whose draining capacity can be increased by combining sand or gravel, is decidedly different. Dark and acid, the peat has a very different color than the calcareous soils, from which it is distinguished above all by the important ability to retain water, which means that it can remain moist for long periods of time. The advantage of a calcareous soil, however, is that when it dries up it can become damp (on human intervention) with relative ease, which is not the case with peat.
