Garden ponds: how to create them

The creation of garden ponds is not simply an aesthetic choice, but can also play a functional role in creating a miniature natural ecosystem, for example by creating a refuge for some animal species. Over time, a pond may require rather limited maintenance: it is certain that it is essential to keep it clean, especially as regards the formation of algae. So let's see some tips and suggestions to create garden ponds that combine practicality and aesthetics. The ideal position, compared to the sun, should be the one facing south, or better still in the south-west: in practice, exposed to the sun but not completely, given that the water with excessively hot temperature would risk causing a harmful proliferation of algae . In short, it is preferable to calculate that, during the day, a third of the water surface is in the shade, for example protected by a fairly high building or simply by a group of trees. It would also be advisable to establish a point with respect to which the pond is more visible, so as to be able to take advantage of the view and the view from the terrace or even from inside the house. Before proceeding with the realization, it is good to plan and plan the dimensions and conformation of the whole, drawing on paper and keeping in mind the jobs you want to do.

Design tips

Furthermore, the bureaucratic aspects should not be underestimated, given that in many Italian Municipalities specific permits are required to carry out the works. The shape of the pond must be designed so as to fit harmoniously with the surrounding context, as well as the possible presence of streams, bridges, waterfalls and lighting systems. The lower plants could be placed on the front, while the taller plant species could find more distant space. One aspect to take into consideration is that linked to the depth of the water, which causes the ice not to affect the bottom in winter, and at the same time that in summer the surface is not too hot. A depth of one meter for a total area of ten square meters is generally desirable. For the entry of water, it is necessary to foresee the attack on a downpipe. In order to prevent mud from being generated in the garden due to rainwater, it is essential to manage the overflow, for example by creating a connection with the well of clear water, or by asking permission in the town hall to enter clear water into the municipal canalization. Alternatively, you can opt for a drainage, which can be achieved by filling a hole at least one meter deep with pebbles and gravel. A last possible solution is to create a trench around the pond, about forty centimeters deep and half a meter wide.

The materials

Of course, for the placement of filters, pumps and lamps it must be taken into account that the pipes for electric cables must be present. Also the choice of plants constitutes an important moment in the decision-making process, also because the need to build plantation niches depends on it. As much attention must be paid to the type of material to be used. In general, the prefabricated tanks are of reduced dimensions, which have the advantage of not requiring particular or demanding jobs, and therefore can also be used without problems by a private individual. The laying of a sheet is more complicated, but it can easily adapt to the excavation and allows any shape to be made.

Garden ponds: At work

Once the planning is complete, it is possible to proceed with the excavation work, starting to trace the shape of the pond on the ground by picketing. Excavations for drainage, for connection to the ducts and for all electrical cables must not be forgotten. Once the excavation phase is complete, it is necessary to remove any object that could represent an obstacle or otherwise create problems: roots, stones, etc. The sand is then laid, followed by an anti-rodent net to protect itself from mice and moles that could pierce the sheet with some ease. The upper layer will be made of felt: you can choose from half-kilo to square meter felt, finer (ideal when, during excavations, you encounter rock), and felt from eight hundred grams per square meter, bigger . Finally, it will be the turn of a waterproof sheet: a sheet that can be easily repaired and welded, not only for possible repairs but above all to enlarge the pond, if necessary. A very good solution is the Sarnafil type, but nothing prevents you from ordering a customized sheet, taking care of measuring the measurements in collaboration with the supplier company. Furthermore, we take into account that the cloth will be more elastic during a hot day, and therefore it can be spread more easily. After the cloth, a net must be applied in order to prevent gravel falling on the bottom of the pond. In conclusion, it must be specified that any bridges must be made over a block in stone or concrete, with a distance with the water of a maximum of seven centimeters.
