The American potato is a very interesting old variety that has received recognition from amateur gardeners and business farmers.

Potatoes are distinguished by beautiful coloration of large tubers, tender pulp, high nutrient content and moderate calorie content. Caring for the bushes is simple, and the yield pleases even beginners.

Potato American belongs to the canteen, medium early. Tubers sprout amicably, bushes develop rapidly. The variety prefers a moderately warm climate and normal humidity levelbut is able to withstand short-term heat and drought.

The yield depends on soil nutrition and climatic conditions. From 1 hectare, you can learn at least 200 centners of selected tubers, with frequent feeding and watering, the yield rises to 400 centners per hectare.

The variety is resistant to many dangerous diseases: potato crayfish, common scab, various viruses. Possible infection with late blight or black leg. Abundant greenery attracts pests.

The tubers have a very pleasant taste: delicate, balanced, not dry or watery. The high starch content makes potatoes suitable for making mashed potatoes, stewing, boiling.

American is the popular name of the old Early Rosa variety, bred in 1861 by breeders from the United States. In Russia, the variety became known at the end of the century before last, it was tested and was proposed for industrial cultivation.

After the revolution, potatoes were recommended for cultivation on collective and state farms, it demonstrated high productivity and unpretentiousness... Zoned for the Voronezh, Penza, Kursk, Tomsk regions, and is successfully growing in other regions.

Today, the variety is actively distributed among amateur gardeners, grown on farms and industrial fields. Large, even tubers can be stored for a long time and are suitable for sale.

Advantages and disadvantages

Growing features

Potato variety American it is preferable to propagate with eyes. Selected large tubers are processed with a growth stimulator, and then cut into segments with a disinfected knife. Planting is done when the soil warms up enough. In cold soil, germinated eyes can rot.

The soil should be light, nutritious. Before planting, it is fertilized with humus or peat. When tying tubers, root feeding with diluted mullein or potassium-based mineral fertilizer is recommended.

10 days before harvesting, the bushes can be sprayed with a superphosphate solution. It is not recommended to use nitrogen-containing complexes. The variety is prone to abundant growth of green mass to the detriment of the development of tubers.

Bushes need to be spud at least 2 times per season. Weeds are removed at the same time. To maintain a normal moisture level, the aisles can be mulched. Drip irrigation is recommended. If its organization is not possible, planting is watered by hand 2-3 times per season, with the soil moistened by at least 50 cm.

For subsequent plantings, select tubers from the strongest, most promising, not recovered bushes are needed. During cultivation, they are marked with ribbons, after digging, the seed tubers are sorted, dried and stored separately.

Diseases and pests

The American potato variety is resistant to many dangerous diseases: viruses, potato cancer, common scab. Possible defeat by late blight. For prevention, the bushes are treated with medicinal preparations. To prevent the plants from getting sick with black leg, the soil is mulched with straw or cut grass.
